7 INNOVATIVE SMALL BUSINESS IDEAS FOR WOMEN
FOR THE PHOTOGRAPHER: As a photographer, you spend hours photographing weddings followed by days on end editing the photos and delivering them to your clients. You love big projects, but sometimes it is just too much. For some extra cash flow as well as some variety, you decide to offer 1 hour “mini” session photoshoots. Clients get to wear one outfit and choose one location; what they want the photos of is completely up to them. These sessions are affordable to any budget, and make the commitment easy for you as well as your clients. Files are delivered electronically, which saves you money as well as time. Everyone is happy! The word spreads fast and you get to fit a few mini shoots into your schedule every month.
FOR THE COOK: Okay, so cooking may not be your day job, but you make some incredible meals and could use some extra cash. To do so, you decide to host a once-a-month 10 person seasonal dinner. 10 people is the perfect amount for your huge dining table on the back porch of your country home. Everyone loves to sit out there under the white lights. To get a feel for your guest’s dietary restrictions and preferences, you create a free Survey Monkey poll that they answer upon registration. Registration and payment must be submitted two weeks prior to the event. After receiving group feedback, you create the 4-course menu - everyone gets the same meal. You decide to charge a high-scale rate per head that makes you a worthwhile profit and pairs well with the extraordinary experience you’ve created for your guests. You market the event to couples as a unique special night out, and before long it’s a hot item in your community.
FOR THE SINGLE MOM: Anyone who knows a single mom knows that she doesn’t have a lot of free time, but could always use some extra cash. You decide to create a neighborhood communication forum where your neighbors can post help-wanted ads. Jobs must be paid in cash on the spot, take under 3 hours to complete, and provide the supplies needed to get the job done. While your kids are in school, you pick up a few of the help-wanted jobs every week for some extra spending money. This way, you have the flexibility to make it work with your busy schedule, and start a neighborhood network while you’re at it! Little did you know when you started this forum, that there were other single moms in the neighborhood also needing this opportunity. Way to go, mom!
FOR THE STARVING ARTIST: You can draw like none other, but sitting at home doing it for yourself isn’t paying the bills. You decide to team up with (1) a local screen printing shop and (2) a boutique to screen print some of your images onto apparel and bags. The boutique requests a themed design under the agreement that you can display your business cards at their shop. Of course, you would choose a screen-printer with the highest quality linens for the job. As your items become well-known around town, you find yourself a nice cooperative to cycle your different designs. This outlet fulfills your creative side, and you get a side job to fill in the rest.
FOR THE GRAPHIC DESIGNER: You are doing well in your job, but want a side project to mix up your work load. You decide to team up with the cook (from #2 above) to design special labels for wine bottles. The labels contain the date of the special event, location, and a themed image. You sell them in bulk to the cook as a goodie for each couple to take home. The price of the wine is incorporated into the price guests pay for dinner, but comes to them as a special surprise! This little treat makes everyone happy. People are suckers for a good wine label, yourself included.
FOR THE LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT STUDENT: You are working away at school, learning new skills and wanting to share them with the world. You decide to create a $2 app that allows users to create their dream home landscaping. If all they do is play in the app, you make some passive income to help pay for your tuition. If they want to turn their dream into a reality, one click on a well-displayed button in the app connects them with you to for a real life hire! You start growing your clientele so that you hit the ground running post-graduation.
FOR THE NON-PROFIT PRESIDENT: You have an incredible cause, but are having a hard time showing donors the reality of the people’s lives in Africa that you are working with. You decide to use virtual reality goggles to show people living conditions on the ground. Users put on the goggles and look straight into the village their funds support. These goggles give donors a tangible understanding of the needs that exist, and help them to feel more connected to the projects. Using this new technology serves everyone involved!
